Arc de Triomphe in the Snow

The Arc de Triomphe rises through drifting snowfall in this Paris winter scene by Gustave Loiseau, its monumental arch softened to a faint silhouette against a flat grey sky. Short, layered oil strokes build the white ground, violet and blue shadow pooling where snow gathers on the sculpted reliefs. Bare plane trees line the avenue in dark calligraphy. Small figures cross the Étoile roundabout like inked marks beneath the monument.
