Cliffs drop sheer into cold water on Anglesey, the Welsh coastal subject Richard Jack set down in thick oil strokes, salt wind almost audible in the paint. Slate water works against dark rock, white spume bursting at its foot in short loaded dabs of lead white. Grass on the headland bends one way under a sky of pearl and pewter cloud, and light falls in a single pale path across the tide. Set in a study or stairway, it cools a warm room and carries the clean blowing air of the Irish Sea indoors.
